Artist: Michael Chissick
Acrylic Painting on canvas
In ‘Charlie’ I paint Charlie Chaplin from the front, but only from the neck down. I want viewers to stop, look closely, and slowly realise who they are looking at, as the figure starts to feel familiar before they recognise him.
The jacket, trousers, cane, shoes, and the way the body is standing are what give his identity away. The cane and the shabby suit quietly suggest Chaplin’s well-known tramp character.
I was drawn to the tones and textures in his worn clothing. What seems like a simple outfit actually contains a wide range of light and dark areas and surface details. Working with these subtle changes helped me create depth in the painting and reflect the quiet humanity and lasting presence that Chaplin brought to the tramp.
