THE GODFATHER

£1,200.00

Artist: Michael Chissick

  • Acrylic Painting on canvas board

    • I couldn’t resist such an iconic image.

It was also an opportunity to be very disciplined and use just three colours: Prussian Blue, Titanium White and a tiny bit of Ultramarine. I wanted to see how much I could achieve with such a restricted palette, particularly in creating the light and shadow across the face.

There is something about Brando’s portrayal of Don Vito Corleone that goes far beyond simply looking stern or menacing. There’s power, authority and a hint of vulnerability in the character, and I’ve tried to capture some of that in the painting.

I deliberately kept the background almost entirely black, allowing the face to emerge from the darkness. The blue gives the portrait a slightly cold, dramatic quality, while the white highlights pick out the distinctive features and make the expression feel almost sculptural.

I think I’ve captured something of what Brando created in the character — that unforgettable mixture of presence, menace and quiet authority.
