Gaza Dad

£1,500.00

Artist: Michael Chissick

  • Acrylic Painting on canvas

    • The genocide, loss of life and violation of human rights taking place in Gaza and the West Bank are unbearable.  Through this painting, I wanted to express something of a parent’s unbearable grief—the pain, desperation and frustration of a father unable to protect the child in his arms.

I began by underpainting the canvas with cadmium orange mixed with titanium white. Against this warm, unsettled background, I painted the father and child mainly in Prussian blue mixed with titanium white to create the lighter tones. The contrast between the burning orange and the cold blue intensifies the emotion of the scene.

The brushstrokes radiating from the father echo an explosion of anguish - a cry that cannot be contained - and connect to the explosions that are destroying life and land.  Although the painting is connected to Gaza and the West Bank , its subject is universal. It is about a parent’s grief, the suffering of innocent people and, as ever, the terrible futility of war, and above all why humans can treat others so badly
